About Us (BuddhA jewelry)
Our Founder
The brand took root from the decades-long immersion in Buddhist philosophy and artisanal heritage of our founder, Venerable Maya. Raised in a centuries-old monastery nestled in the misty hills of Bhutan, she grew up surrounded by the soft clink of prayer bells and the scent of juniper incense. Under the guidance of her teacher, a master goldsmith and monk, she learned to forge copper into ritual bowls and carve wooden prayer beads, all while studying the sutras that taught: “The divine resides not only in temples, but in the hands that craft, the eyes that perceive, and the hearts that carry meaning.”
In her travels across the Buddhist heartlands—from the ancient stupas of Sri Lanka to the cave temples of Dunhuang—Venerable Maya was struck by a universal truth: every piece of sacred jewelry told a story. A Thai amulet inscribed with “Metta” (loving-kindness) carried the warmth of its maker’s breath; a Tibetan turquoise pendant, polished by generations of hands, held the weight of shared devotion. These artifacts were not mere ornaments, but vessels—for faith, for memory, for the quiet resolve to live with intention. It sparked her vision: to craft jewelry that honors this legacy, yet feels as natural in a bustling marketplace as it does in a meditation hall.
Founded in 2015 in Bali, the brand embodies the principle “Craft as Worship, Wear as Remembrance.” Venerable Maya often remarks, “Buddhist jewelry should not whisper of distant heavens, but of the sacred in the here and now—the way light catches a lotus petal, the pause before a kind word, the strength to begin again.”
Our Mission
We strive to weave the essence of Buddhist wisdom into the fabric of daily life, with reverence for tradition and relevance to all.
- Cultivating Presence: Through symbols like the endless knot (representing interconnectedness) and the Bodhi leaf (a nod to the Buddha’s enlightenment), our pieces invite small moments of mindfulness. A wrist mala with 27 beads, for example, becomes a tool to count breaths during a busy commute; a ring etched with a tiny Buddha’s footprint reminds the wearer to walk gently on the earth.
- Honoring Roots, Welcoming All: We work closely with scholars and practitioners to ensure every design respects Buddhist iconography—from the correct posture of a meditating Buddha to the sacred syllables of mantras. Yet these symbols are offered as universal touchstones: “Enlightenment” here means clarity of mind, “Compassion” means care for others, values that resonate beyond any single faith.
- Sustaining Craft and Creation: We partner with artisan communities in Nepal, Laos, and India, providing fair wages and preserving endangered techniques like “lost-wax casting” and natural dyeing. Using recycled silver, ethically sourced gemstones, and sustainably harvested woods, we ensure each piece honors both the earth and the hands that made it.
Our Design
Our creations balance “reverence” and “approachability,” letting the symbols speak softly rather than shout.
- Symbols Stripped to Their Essence: A lotus earring, for instance, uses a single curved line to suggest a bud unfurling—simple enough to wear with jeans, yet rich enough to spark reflection. A Dharma wheel pendant, minus ornate details, focuses on the eight spokes: a quiet reminder of the Noble Eightfold Path, or simply, the many paths to living fully.
- Materials with Memory: We choose materials that age gracefully, bearing the marks of their journey. Oxidized silver develops a patina like a well-loved book; sandalwood beads absorb the scent of the wearer’s skin; jade, with its faint inclusions, tells of the mountains where it formed. These imperfections are not flaws, but testaments to life’s beautiful impermanence.
- Versatility as a Virtue: A long necklace with a mantra pendant can be layered over a t-shirt or worn alone with a saree; a set of prayer beads doubles as a bracelet for those who prefer subtlety. The goal is not to stand out, but to steady—like a trusted friend, present but unobtrusive.
Each piece is crafted with the same care a monk devotes to arranging altar flowers: slowly, mindfully, with the hope that it will accompany the wearer through joys and struggles alike. For in the end, we believe the most sacred jewelry is not one that adorns the body, but one that nourishes the soul.
